Lok Sabha elections 2019: What's at stake for regional parties

11 Apr 2019, 07:00AM ISTSource: TNN

BJP and Congress are two major political parties in India. The two together won an average of 56.5 percent seats in the last four Lok Sabha Elections. So, if BJP’s seat share falls in comparison to 2014, regional parties may become a major driving force in the 2019 elections. The two parties have together won a maximum 60 percent seats in 2014 and a minimum of 52 percent in 2004. This implies that a share of at least 40 percent remained with regional parties in spite of anti-incumbencies, political and regional issues. Both BJP and Congress have formed governments with the support of regional parties. Conclusively, if Congress manages to raise the number of seats from 44 in 2014, it won’t be taking away the share of regional parties but from BJP’s piggy of 282 seats.
