CHENNAI: Residents of Chitlapakkam here have put up posters warning people who dump garbage in public places.

Residents cleaned and beautified Kulam Corner in Kulakkarai Street and Anna Street and put up posters that read: “People may spit on the faces of those who dump garbage on the road.”

Sunil Jayaram of Chitlapakkam Rising said they had been cleaning various locations in the streets regularly. “But we realised that there was no change as the dumping continued. So we decided to put up such posters. We put them up last weekend after which dumping of waste has become nil. We are glad that this has worked,” he said.

He added that the poster was not to disrespect anyone but to sensitise people about problems that roadside trash created for others.

“If the panchayat or the municipality is not collecting garbage from the household, a resident can meet officials and complain. Dumping it on the road is not at all a solution,” he said.

They even added the municipality number – 18004251600 – for people to raise their complaints on garbage collection.
