Haley Dunphy is a married woman!

During Wednesday’s episode of Modern FamilySarah Hyland‘s character, who’s close to nine months pregnant, had an epiphany after going into false labor.

“That was weird, the doctor called you my husband,” Haley said to boyfriend Dylan (Reid Ewing) as they walked out of the doctor’s office. “It was weird because I liked it.”

“Seriously,” Dylan asked. “Because I’ve proposed like six times.”

“I know it just seemed so old fashioned at the time,” Haley replied. “But when I thought that the babes were coming …”

At that moment, a very pregnant Haley attempted to get down on one knee and ask the big question … but not without a little stumble to the ground, thanks to her growing belly.

To avoid the stresses of planning an elaborate wedding, the newly engaged couple decided to elope … that same day! But, of course, Haley’s mom Claire (Julie Bowen) was disappointed when she found out.

But the stress-free wedding Haley had hoped for was slowly turning into a disaster.

Quickly realizing her daughter’s dismay, Claire and Phil (Ty Burrell) gave their blessing to Haley and Dylan and suggested they elope.

“We’re really sorry that this all got away from us, but all we care about is that you’re happy and you should have the wedding you want,” Claire told the couple.

“You’re mom’s right,” added Phil. “We eloped and I still think of it as the best day of my life.”

Despite getting the ‘OK,’ Haley and Dylan decided against eloping.

Later that evening, Haley walked into her parents’ room and said, “We didn’t go through with it. Something about it just didn’t feel right.”

“I thought about what you said about how I should have the wedding that I want,” she added. “Well, the wedding that I want has you guys there.”

And just like that, in their living room, with Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould) by their side, Phil – who happened to be an ordained minister – performed the ceremony and declared the duo as husband and wife.

On Wednesday, hours before the episode aired, Hyland took to Instagram to tease the epic proposal, writing, “Not as graceful or romantic as Monica … But I’ll take representing a strong woman who knows what she wants any day.”

In January, Haley found out she was having twins and was taken back at first.

“That’s impossible,” she said in a previous episode. “It’s a mistake. I can’t have twins. That’s twice as many babies as we were expecting. How are they going to fit in our place? How are they going to fit in my body? One is always going to be awake. I’ll never sleep again. And those double strollers are so wide, I can say goodbye to ever shopping in a boutique.”

But, Momma Dunphy stepped in and calmed her nerves.

“You’re not alone,” Claire said. “As you’re about to find out, being a mom is very complicated. Luckily there are these instincts that kick in, especially when your kid’s in trouble. So, if you’re overwhelmed, I’m right over your shoulder on the wings of a hummingbird.”

Modern Family airs Wednesdays (9 p.m. ET) on ABC.
