Gold worth Rs 1.15 crore seized from passengers at Chennai airport

CHENNAI: Customs officials at Chennai International Airport detected ten cases of gold smuggling on Wednesday and Thursday morning. They seized a total of 3.5 kg of gold, worth Rs 1.15 crore.
On Thursday morning, the officials intercepted three passengers at the exit of arrival hall. Irsath, 24, of Ramanathapuram and Mohamed Sirajudeen, 29, of Chennai arrived here from Colombo in a SriLankan Airlines flight and a SpiceJet flight, respectively. Muzammil Riswan, 30, of Chennai arrived here from Dubai in an IndiGo Airlines flight.
The officials searched them and recovered rubbery spreads kept concealed in their rectums. On extraction, gold weighing 909 gram of 24 karat purity valued at Rs 30 lakh was recovered.
On Wednesday, the official detected seven cases of gold smuggling.
Ethiopian national Muhubo Aden Muhamed, 56, who arrived here from Nairobi via Sharjah in an Air Arabia flight, was intercepted at the exit of the arrival hall. The woman passenger was asked whether she was carrying gold. She was evasive in her replies and appeared to be nervous.
When the officials searched her, yellow metallic powder which was kept concealed in her under garments was recovered. On extraction, 1.26 kg of gold of 94% purity valued at Rs 39.15 lakh was recovered. She was arrested.
From her travel documents, it was noticed that she had come to India several times earlier and had landed at Mumbai and Delhi airports earlier.
Sahabar Sadiq Ali,48, of Nambuthalai and Iburahimsha, 44, of R Puthuppattinam, who had arrived here from Colombo by a SriLankan Airlines flight, were intercepted. They were found carrying gold in the form of rubbery spreads kept concealed in their rectums. On extraction, 483 gram of gold of 24 K purity valued at Rs 16 lakh was recovered.
On the same night, four more cases were detected. Mohamed Sulthan, 43, of Madurai, Sulaiman, 23, of Ramanathapuram, Sheik Abdullah, 22, and Ajmal Khan,33, both of Ramanathapuram, arrived here from Colombo in an Air India flight. They were intercepted at the exit of arrival hall.
