PUNE: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will soon start new skill-based courses at its Nashik sub-centre to create employment opportunities for tribal youths residing in Sonai area of Nashik district.

The varsity has identified few skill-based courses which include winery, bee-keeping and weaving of Paithani silk etc.

“New short-term courses will be introduced in this sub-centre. Hence, it prevents migration of youths from Sonai which falls under a tribal belt in Dindori taluka of Nashik district,” read the official statement released by the university.

Savitribai Phule Pune University has been also planning to start a new permanent sub-centre on an area of 10,000 sq ft to provide these courses. The existing sub-centre is currently functional in a temporary building where full-time MBA courses are offered.

“Due to lack of space in the current sub-centre, the university is trying to procure space on rent at a municipal school in Nashik. As soon as it is finalised, the MBA course will be shifted to the new location. The university is following up on this matter,” read the official statement.

These developments were decided in a recent meeting held by Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar, Pro-VC, NS Umarani, Registrar, Prafulla Pawar and other members at the Nashik sub-centre. The authorities had also visited the Sonai area in Nashik district, said Pawar.
