AMMK’s Chennai South candidate says victory is his only aim

A resident of Ashok Nagar, Esakki Subaya, the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam’s (AMMK) candidate for Chennai South, says he is aware of the pulse of the constituency and needs of the people.

Excerpts from an interview with the former Law Minister:

What are the main issues faced by the residents of Chennai South?

There is water scarcity here and the drainage system too needs attention. People here tend to focus only on bridges, roads and other infrastructure, but basic civic amenities are very important. Relocation of people from the core city to areas like Semmenchery has been carried out without any concern for their livelihood.

The Pallikaranai marsh has emerged as a major poll issue. Your thoughts?

It is an ecologically sensitive area and has been degraded. There is constant talk about funds being allocated, but nothing has been done towards effective conservation. We are not just giving promises, but speaking the truth and will ensure that conservation activities are taken up.

What do you think about the AIADMK and DMK candidates?

Not just them, I don’t see any of the 30 candidates as my competition. I am working towards victory in my constituency and that is my only aim.

What has been the response to you and the party in the constituency?

People are very clear that they want a new leader. They have been very welcoming of our party and T.T.V. Dhinakaran.

What sets the AMMK apart in the elections?

People have no faith in the DMK or the AIADMK. We will ensure that rights of the people of Tamil Nadu are protected.

At the same time, our party’s internal structure is such that right from the candidates to booth-level workers, everyone works in complete coordination.
