CHENNAI: An income tax investigation team seized Rs 50 lakh from the residence of AIADMK member Kalpana Sethu in Trichy district on Thursday. Kalpana is a former chairwoman of the Vaiyampatti panchayat union.

"Based on information, we searched her residence and found unaccounted money. She couldn’t show any source of the money. Therefore, we seized it," said a senior income tax investigation wing official.

The income tax department has seized Rs 37.78 crore from various people in the state since the model code came into effect on March 10 after the Election Commission announced Lok Sabha polls.

On Tuesday, Rs 60 lakh was seized from the residence of Nagayya Chetty of Tiruvannamalai. On the same day, Rs 40 lakh was seized from the residence of the owner of Kavi Medical and General Stores in Vellore.
