Nara janma bandaga, Nalige iruvaga, Krishna enabarade....., a widely sung dasara pada in classical kuctheris receives western treatment by Kannada playback singer, H.G. Chaitra. Conceptualised and produced by her, ‘Krishna’, a recreated melody of the old Kannada hymn released on the eve of Ugadi is available on her youtube page .
The singer who is known for her peppy numbers like Huduga Huduga (from the Kannada film Amruthadhare), now wants to present her Hindustani classical side to her audience. “As a Hindustani vocalist, I have performed classical music in sabhas and kutcheris but people outside this sphere are not aware of this side of me,” says the artiste who has sung a large number of songs for films in not only Kannada but also Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
“As this year marks 20th anniversary of my career in cinema, I thought of paying a tribute to my classical training which has sustained my long career in film music,” she says, adding that the Purandara Dasa’s composition is her all-time-favourite.
The song is sung in Hindustani style and recorded in a single take. “The idea was to keep it similar to the kutcheri rendition,” she informs. The background music by Dheerendhra Doss of Live Banned “is sure to attract the attention of youngsters,” feels the vocalist. The purpose of these kind of music releases is “mainly to make more youth get attuned to classical numbers,” adds Chaitra, who is supported by budding cinematographer Pratheek Shetty for shooting this video.
