Guess where 40% drunk drivers go in Bengaluru? To buy booze

BENGALURU: Over 61% of Bengalureans who consume liquor admitted they drive under its influence, while 40% said they do so only to procure more alcoholic beverages. This is according to a study conducted by KPMG to assess liquor consumption patterns and adoption of an online alcohol delivery model in five metros in the country.
The study, commissioned by HipBar — an RBI-approved payment gateway for alcoholic and other beverages — also pointed to unavailability of brands and unruly crowds at retail liquor outlets in Bengaluru as the topmost issues, while 64% of women cited safety as the major concern.
In New Delhi, 44% of customers admitted to drunk driving to procure more alcohol in the middle of a binge session, while 78% customers in Hyderabad stated they’d adopt the online delivery mode as it would considerably reduce the number of drunk-driving cases.
While 60% of the women surveyed in Hyderabad also reported feeling unsafe while buying alcohol from liquor outlets, for New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, the same figure stood at 100%. In Kolkata, for instance, 82% of the men also reported safety as the top concern.
The study was conducted among 350 respondents across five metros. It used insights derived from an analysis of over 67,794 transactions that were carried out by 17,977 users in Bengaluru over a period of 13 months (between October 2017 and October 2018) during beta testing of HipBar app in the city.
Speaking about the findings of the survey, Prasanna Natarajan, founder and CEO, HipBar, said, “Drinking and driving is an area of serious concern. People who drive to drink also drive after a drink to get back home.”
“Home delivery of alcoholic beverages through the aid of technology is an option to foster responsible consumption. We can say with certainty that home delivery within a well-monitored system will foster “cultured drinking” and help moderate drinking habits, especially among the youth, without causing any loss to retail trade,” he added.
