Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) broke open the gate in front of the Arts Faculty of Delhi University on Wednesday demanding to meet the Vice-Chancellor.
Despite efforts by the police personnel to stop them, the students pushed the gate until it came off its hinges. A few members of the outfit entered the campus, but quickly returned back to the gate. The protesters calmed down soon after that.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor agreed to meet the protesting students on Thursday, the body said in a statement.
Host of issues
The students’ body along with the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) raised a host of issues such as organising supplementary examinations, provision of a 24x7 library, construction of new hostels, increase in diet for sports students, availability of gynaecologist in colleges, tactile paths for visually-challenged students and others.
Attacking the university administration, DUSU president Shakti Singh said that its lack of seriousness had led to a fall in the university’s rankings. DU was placed 20 in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) this year, down from last year’s rank of 14.
