Thiruveedhi Amman Koil Street Residents Association (RWA) is working with the Traffic Police and ITDP to regulate parking, and chidren are going to be given a weighty role in projects to enhance road safety in and around the neighbourhood.
“We are in the process of demarcating parking areas and the children from our neighbourhood and students from Chennai Public School will be drawing the parking and other signs on the road. They will be doing this work in cooperation with the traffic officials,” he adds. Through the initiative, the RWA hopes to educate children on traffic rules, pedestrian rights and road safety.
“We teach our children that their neighbourhood and its welfare are their responsibility. When we introduce and implement waste management and sustainable living practices, we make sure that children also have a first-hand idea of it. They know how to compost and what products can be recycled. Here, children don’t litter and drop off all recyclable waste in the Urbins placed in the street. Children join with volunteers with enthusiasm for the wall-painting projects, says K.L. Bala.
Next week, TAKSRA is also planning a session on source segregation and composting for the children.
