After handing the bag over to be searched, he was allegedly hit in the face.

The man suffered a shattered jaw, broken teeth, and cuts and will require surgery.

The alleged attacker, Jonathan Ewington, handed himself into police on Tuesday.

He was charged with intentionally and recklessly causing serious injury and was released on bail.

He maintained his innocence.

'There was no intention to hurt anyone. I was just interested in getting the bags that I thought they had stolen out of the tent,' the 36-year-old told 9News.

Officers want to speak to two female staff who were acting as security at the event, as witnesses say they yelled at the alleged attacker to stop.

The victim's friend Hari denied they stole any beer. 'The only thing we did wrong was us going to the party,' he said.
