Gantz, Netanyahu Declare Victory In Israel Election

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his biggest rival, Benny Gantz, both claimed victory after what could be a record-breaking parliamentary election Tuesday.  The controversial right-wing prime minister is fighting to win a fifth term in office, which would make him Israel's longest-serving prime minister.

But he's been battling  allegations of corruption , and there's still a chance Gantz could win.  Opinion polls show Gantz and Netanyahu are tied, or that Gantz is slightly leading.

Gantz called Tuesday's election a "historic vote" for Israel, and supporters of his Blue and White party were celebrating Tuesday evening.  It  could be weeks  before the results are announced, though.

No party in Israel has ever won an outright majority in Parliament.

That means days of coalition negotiations are likely in the future.  Additional reporting from  Newsy affiliate CNN .
