GREATER NOIDA: A 22-year-old woman was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room on Monday after she was allegedly beaten up by her husband. The man has been arrested.

Shakuntala Devi, from Kannauj, had married Ram Kumar (26) about three years ago. Ram works as a supervisor at a building site at Tigri Khajoor village, Bisrakh.

Shakuntala’s relatives said she was upset over Ram’s repeated demand for money. The woman’s cousin Manoj Kumar told TOI that around 11.30 am on Monday, a neighbour, Ranjeet, told Shakuntala’s mother Ram had called to say Shakuntala had hanged herself.

“Shocked, her mother called up Ram and asked him to give the phone to Shakuntala. When he could not, Shakuntala’s brothers left for Noida,” Manoj said.

“Shakuntala was in Kannauj for Holi. She was disturbed as Ram would harass her. When she returned, she took Anjali with her to help her take care of their six-year-old,” Manoj said.

On April 6, Ram visited Kannauj and threatened Shakuntala’s relatives saying they should give him Rs 5 lakh for a plot he wanted to buy, otherwise it will not be good for Shakuntala.

Anjali told TOI that at 11 am on Monday, Ram scolded Shakuntala and slapped her many times. “He gave the child to me and asked me to go outside. I went to the neighbour’s house downstairs. When I returned, I saw my sister hanging. Blood was oozing out of her head,” she said. An FIR was lodged against Ram under IPC Section 304 B (dowry death). Manoj Pathak, SHO, Bisrakh, told TOI Ram was arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday. “It seems to be a case of suicide due to domestic violence,” he said.
