Varanasi: The ambitious Swachha Bharat mission of Narandra Modi government seems to be suffering apathy of the local governance in his own constituency.
Despite directives issued by the UP Solid Waste Management Monitoring Committee (UPSWMMC), a body constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the garbage dumped on the banks of river Varuna near Puranapul was not removed.
Taking serious note of the laxity, the UPSWMMC has decided to call the local authorities in its meeting scheduled to be held on April 24 in Lucknow. The committee chairman Justice DP Singh had inspected the Puranapul area during his visit to the city on March 31 and directed the officials to ensure immediate removal of the waste from the river banks. “No report in this regard has been received so far from Varanasi. We are calling the officials from Varanasi to attend the meeting in Lucknow on April 24,” UPSWMMC secretary and former judge Rajendra Singh told TOI on Wednesday.
Municipal commissioner Nitin Bansal said that a team of engineers has been formed to find a way out to utilize the solid waste. The matter would be resolved shortly, he said.
