MUMBAI: The crime branch on Monday arrested an accused in a robbery case, who had been on the run for 33 years.
Crime branch unit 8 led by inspector Arun Pokharkar and staff got a tipoff that Salim Rukiya Khan, who had jumped bail in 1984, had left his Goregaon house and was staying at Mira Road in Thane.
"Based on this information, we sent teams to track him down. But so much time had lapsed that it was nearly impossible to identify the accused based on his old photograph or name," said Pokharkar.
Police said after doggedly trying to trace him for a month, the crime branch identified the accused who used to run an estate agency.
Police said Khan initially told the cops they had got the wrong person. He was handed over to Sahar police who had registered a robbery case against Khan and his three aides. In the late '90s, the court had acquitted the three accused, but Khan was absconding.
