“YouTube has over 265 million monthly active users in India, an 18 percent growth over last year”
At the YouTube annual Brandcast event, Google-owned YouTube has announced that it now has over 265 million monthly active users in India, citing ComScore data. This represents a growth of around 18 percent over last year, when it had 225 million monthly active users. It said that India is its largest and fastest-growing market in the world and also revealed insights on the company’s growth in the online video ecosystem and how India growth was linked internally.
Susan Wojcicki, YouTube CEO, said, “India is now both our biggest audience and one of our fastest growing audiences in the world. YouTube today has become the first stop for users to consume content, whether they’re looking for entertainment or information. It is this incredible variety of content combined with the growing reach that makes YouTube a perfect platform for brands to drive personalised engagement.”
Over the course of the year, YouTube’s mobile consumption in India has increased to 85 percent, with 60 percent of the watch time is from outside of the six largest metros. There are around 1,200 Indian creators with over one million subscribers, which is a drastic growth considering there were only two creators with a million subscribers five years ago. Separately, Adam Smith, YouTube VP of Product Management mentioned that daily active users in India had grown 100 percent year-on-year.
The company launched the YouTube Music and YouTube Premium streaming services in India in March. YouTube Music also has an ad-supported version, while the paid service comes with an ‘Offline Mixtape’ that lets users download up to 100 songs that you like and listen to the most. The list will keep getting refreshed, and you can turn it off and off from the settings. While the YouTube Premium offers all the features of Music, but also gets access to the full slate of original shows and movies from the company.
