A team of doctors from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has removed a stone measuring 22 cm and weighing 60 gm from the ureter of a woman and claimed that this was the longest ureteric stone reported till now.
“The patient, Natasha, a resident of Saharanpur, was completely pain-free and unaware of the massive stone that lay inside her body. Such large stones are usually removed by open or large incision procedures. Although current technology allows many modes of treating the stone with minimal invasion, none is foolproof and may need staged attempts for complete removal,” said a release issued by the hospital.
Quick recovery
According to Sachin Kathuria, consultant, Department of Urology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital “The use of surgical robot made it possible to remove such a long stone in a single surgery with minimum scar and ensured quick recovery.”
Multitude of treatment
Kidney stones are very common and the large stone burden are also not uncommon and need multitude of treatment forms to remove them completely.
The team of doctors used a robot (known as Da Vinci) to completely remove the stone in a single stage in an exhaustive procedure lasting four hours, said Dr. Kathuria.
Discharged on Day 2
“The functional outcome of the surgery was reassuring and satisfactory and the patient was discharged on the second day of surgery and is doing well,” added the release.
