CHENNAI: In view of the unprecedented heat, the director of matriculation schools in Tamil Nadu has banned all special classes during summer holidays. State board schools are scheduled to close for summer holidays on April 12.
In a circular to all chief educational officers on Tuesday, director of matriculation schools S Kannappan said the directorate had received many complaints from parents that private schools were conducting special classes during the summer vacation.
"If the students are forced to attend the classes during the summer, they would get heat related diseases. Hence, the private schools strictly need to be instructed not to conduct any special classes during the vacation," he said in the circular.
He further said the officials should take immediate action if they receive any complaints from parents against private schools in this regard.
The school education department has advanced the closure of schools by ten days this year due to general elections.
School education director V C Rameswaramurugan said all schools, including CBSE and other boards schools, should not conduct any classes during the summer vacation.
"The academic calendar for CBSE schools is different. But, we will advise them not to conduct classes during summer vacation," he added.
As per the original schedule, the academic calendar for CBSE schools will end on April 26.
"But, the state government sent us a circular to keep April 12 as last working day in view of elections. The lower classes up to VIII standard are likely to be given holidays. For board exam students, we need to finish the portions. So, they would be asked to come half a day until April 26," said Radhika Unni, principal, SBOA school and junior college, Chennai.
