Tirupur: A trial court here on Tuesday awarded 13 years imprisonment to a 38-year-old man for abetting suicide of his wife.
K Sangameswaran of 15 Velampalayam had married Dharani on June 2, 2009. Dharani's parents gave 150 sovereigns gold to the groom as dowry. But it was not enough for Sangameswaran, who used to torture Dharani demanding more dowry. As she could bear the torture, Dharani committed suicide by hanging on December 18, 2013. Based on the complaint from her parents, 15 Velampalayam police registered a case for dowry harassment and abetting suicide.
The case was tried before the Tirupur mahila court. As the prosecution proved the case against Sangameswaran, judge JP Jayanthi sentenced him to three years in jail for torturing his wife and 10 years for abetting the suicide. It also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000.
