Two days before elections to the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat, the Election Commission of India on Tuesday transferred the Superintendent of Police of the district.
Cooch Behar SP Abhishek Gupta was replaced by Amit Kumar Singh, who will be responsible for maintaining law and order during polls in the district on April 11. The Trinamool Congress cried foul over the transfer and accused the BJP of influencing the ECI. TMC leaders also referred to a speech by BJP leader Mukul Roy on April 7 where he had demanded action against the SP.
Meanwhile, campaign for the first phase of elections in West Bengal ended on Tuesday. Polling for Cooch Behar (SC) and Alipurduar (ST) seats will be held on April 11. A total of 18,09,598 electorates will decide the fate of 11 candidates in Cooch Behar, while 16,42,285 voters will choose from seven of those contesting in Alipurduar.
