Network Rail Announces Next Stage of Work To Bromham Road bridge

Since Monday, 4 March, work has taken place to remove and relocate utilities running through the bridge. This work has progressed well and means that the road will fully re-open to vehicles during the daytime from Friday, 19 April. This system will remain in place until Friday, 21 June.

Work on the project, which will see the bridge demolished and reconstructed at a raised height, will continue. Work will take place overnight from Tuesday, 23 April and will be supported by two-way traffic lights over the bridge. This will remain in place until Friday, 21 June.

By working closely with Bedford Borough Council and phasing the work in this way, the impact on motorists is minimised, particularly for students during the crucial summer exam period.

Raising the height of Bromham Road bridge, to provide a safe distance for the overhead line equipment passing beneath, allows the line between Bedford, Kettering and Corby to be electrified as part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade.

Work to demolish and reconstruct the bridge is scheduled to complete in 2020. However, before this work can take place the underground services running through the bridge are being re-routed over an adjacent scaffold bridge that will be built.
