CHENNAI: A man who four years ago cheated a 42-year-old Perambur resident of Rs 57,000, speaking like a ‘prospective bride’ using a voice modulation app, tried to replicate the con on Monday and was caught. He is being questioned.
In 2015, Karthik (name changed), who runs a consultancy firm, posted his profile and contact number on a matrimonial site saying he was looking for a suitable bride. In a few days, a ‘woman’ calling herself Harini spoke to him over phone and said she was keen on marrying him. Convinced of her ‘caring’ outlook during their conversation, Karthik agreed and the two began exchanging text messages. A few days later, the woman told him her aunt had cancer and she was in desperate need of money. Karthik deposited Rs 45,000 in her bank account. A few days later, she told him she had to buy medicines and he deposited another Rs 12,000.
Then she stopped attending his phone calls before her mobile phone switched off. Karthik realised he had been cheated and tried to trace her but in vain. He did not lodge any complaint with police. Karthik got married in 2017.
On Monday, the woman called him again, apologized for cutting off contact and claimed it was due to a medical emergency. In a couple of hours, when she requested him money to buy a refrigerator and an air conditioner, Karthik decided to meet her in person and asked her to come to Vadapalani the same evening. At the appointed time, Karthik found a man there. Suspicious, he called the number and saw him answer the call in a woman’s voice. He caught hold of the man and handed him over to the Vadapalani police.
During interrogation, Senthil, 29, of Perambur told investigators he used a mobile application to speak to like a woman to Karthik whose number he found on a matrimonial site. He promised to return the cash Karthik gave him.
