Elector-population ratio highest in T. Nagar, lowest in Harbour

Even as several voters have complained about missing names on the electoral rolls, Chennai District Election Office has reported a rise in the elector-population ratio in the constituencies.

“The district has an elector-population ratio of 78, the highest in the State,” said an official.

The ratio of electors for a given population in the Assembly segments is calculated ahead of polls to assess the impact of deletion and inclusion in the rolls.

Chennai district with a population of 49.59 lakh as per 2019 projections, has included 38.66 lakh electors on the rolls so far, following an increase by more than 70,000 in the past few weeks. T. Nagar has reported the highest number of electors for a given population, with an elector-population ratio of 87. As many as 2.31 lakh electors have been enrolled in the areas which have an estimated 1,38,845 men and 1,37,843 women.

The elector-population ratio for men in the area is 85.38 and women is 88.40, according to the data compiled by the Chennai District Election Offiice.

Dip in numbers

The Harbour Assembly segment has the lowest elector-population ratio. Chennai District Election Office has started studying the reasons for a dip in the ratio.

The ratio is as low as 66 in the area. The ratio for men in the area is 65.04 and women 66.49. Harbour Assembly segment, with a population of 2.56 lakh, has just 1.68 lakh electors.

The number of men voters in Harbour segment is significantly higher than women voters.

The number of women voters is higher than men in all other Assembly segments in the city.

The elector-population ratio is 80 in Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, 77 in Perambur, 84 in Kolathur, 86 in Villivakkam, 76 in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, 70 in Egmore, 68 in Royapuram, 66 in Harbour, 76 in Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni, 74 in Thousand Lights, 83 in Anna Nagar, 80 in Virugambakkam, 81 in Saidapet, 87 in Mylapore and 74 in Velachery.
