Vadodara: Heaps of garbage dumped at the Atladara site may soon be cleared.
A major part of the land used for dumping the waste now looks like a flat ground after a project to process legacy waste left behind for years was taken up.
The site at Atladara in possession of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) was used to process organic waste and making compost from it. But the plant stopped operations in 2014. Even before 2014, the plant was able to process only a part of the waste as the solid waste being brought there had a large quantity of inorganic waste. When the plant began operations in 1977, a bulk of the waste being brought there was organic.
Local residents had alleged that waste was brought to the site even after the plant stopped operations. A citizen even moved the National Green Tribunal regarding the waste. VMC officials said that the tribunal had asked the civic body to take steps to take care of the waste and submit an action taken report regarding it.
The civic body gave the work order for scientific processing of the garbage at the site on August 19, 2017. The trial run for the processing plant erected at the site was conducted in July 2018. The site has around three lakh metric tonnes of waste. It was spread in an area of 17.2acres.
The process involves mining of the landfill to lift waste from it, sorting the waste and then its recycling, processing and disposition. The waste is being used to prepare Refuse-derived Fuel (RDF), inert material and soil enrichers. RDF will be sold to cement companies while the soil enrichers will be sold to farmers. The inert material generated from the garbage is non-toxic and can be used as earth-fill for levelling and for land reclamation.
The project has been taken up at a cost of Rs 26.16crore and has a capacity of 1,000 tonnes per day. So far around 10.5acres of the 17.2-acre dumping site has been cleared. The entire site is expected to be cleared by December. Apart from revenue generated from the sale of materials produced at the site, the VMC will also be clearing land worth crores once the project ends.
