MUMBAI: Four commuters are believed to have been looted by 'fatka' thieves in separate instances at Nahur in Mumbai on Monday night. Only one of the victims approached the GRP to lodge a complaint. Security has been stepped up near the Nahur bridge where the instances were reported. None of the commuters suffered any major injury, police said.
"The incident was reported between Nahur and Mulund stations. The bridge is located not far from Nahur station. Commuters standing on the footboard of running locals have been targeted. One of the commuters, Praneet Pawar, 23, told us that a blunt object struck his hand and he dropped his cellphone. He is not sure if he was struck by a stick or a stone," a police officer said.
Pawar, who lives in Thane and works in a private company, approached the Kurla GRP to register a complaint. His stolen phone was worth Rs 17,000. "Locals said at least three other commuters were also targeted but they haven't approached us with complaints yet. We checked with hospitals nearby and no commuter was brought with injuries from stones or sticks," the officer added. Activists said the commuters targeted were fortunate to not have lost their balance and fallen off the speeding local.
The Kurla GRP has registered a case of theft and are probing further.
