The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has collected ₹944 crore as property tax this year, an increase of 36% compared to last year, the civic body said in a statement on Tuesday.
Last year, the corporation had collected ₹694 crore as property tax and transfer duty of ₹518 crore. This year the corporation collected ₹630 crore as transfer duty, an increase of 21.62% compared to last year, the statement added. The increased tax collection was attributed to an increase in the number of taxpayers from 4,10,553 in 2017-18 to 4,41,776 in 2018-10, (an increase of 7.6%) and timely dues paid by government institutions. With the current collection, the corporation exceeded its previously set target of collecting ₹800 crore, it said.
Meanwhile, tax collection by the North civic body has increased by 20% from ₹555.18 crore last year to ₹666.18 crore this year.
In order to increase the number of taxpayers, the three municipal corporations in the city had introduced an amnesty scheme this year through which interest and dues to be paid on unpaid property tax were waived off.
SDMC commissioner Puneet Goyal said the collection will help in execution of development schemes.
