Emerson and i have with me here mary parker, my technician, and this cute little yorkie is named payton.
In january, uh, basically payton was attacked by his brother which is a great pyrenees.
He was actually bitten in the face over this right eye, and what we're gonna talk about is what it looked like when it presented and what we did to save the eye.
Um, the eye was bulging, um, it had a big laceration in it from the tooth that had basically sliced the eye.
Uh, so what we talked about with the owner, we talked of course about removing the eye, but i said let's try one salvage procedure.
I actually went in and i put payton under anesthesia and i went in and i basically cleaned the eye and i sutured the eyelid closed, and what that allowed was for no light to hit the eye.
I did leae a small opening so she could put antibiotics up over the eye to try to go ahead and get it to heal faster.
So we did that procedure, and i think we did that on a friday, and payton presented back on monday, um, we had continued doing the antibiotic uh impregnation in the small hole in the eye and a few days later, i actually cut the sutures out and we opened the eye and we actually saved the eye!
The eye itself had basically healed and formed basically some scar tissue over the area where the tooth had sliced, so this was actually an eye salvaging procedure.
We do this a lot of time in cats.
I've not really done it a lot in dogs, but it turned out wonderful.
All payton has now is a small scar on his eye but he is still, he can see.
Hes doing very, very well.
But one of the learning things that we got out of this and the owner did is if you've got a small dog and a large dog, if you are going to feed them, i would probably feed them separately if you know there is a chance that you could have some aggression, because anybody who has these little yorkies or little chihuahuas, they often act bigger than they are.
And the great pyrenees y'know is a 130 pound dog so payton was very fortunate to only get an eye laceration, but the most important thing is, guys, the owner brought it in as soon as it happened.
They didn't watch it, and anytime you have an eye insult, an eye injury, an eye- draining fluid, bring them in immediately because it can really really damage the eye if not seen sooner.
So if you have a pet at home or you have any questions about a large pet with a small pet, any behavioral questions or issues, give us a call.
I promie your pets will thank you.
