Fair Housing Report lists issues with La Crosse Housing

Chief.

Would you be able to recognize if you were being discriminated against when renting or buying an apartment?

According to new report from the city of la crosse... more than half of residents would not.

News 8's alec giannakopoulos is in our newsroom with on the more findings of the fair housing study.

This morning was the first meeting in city hall to go over the fair housing report.

The report is a requirement by the us department of housing, and the findings of the report show a need for more affordable and avaliable housing in la crosse.

A poll of 900 residents in la crosse and monroe counties showed that no african american in that sample size had owned a home.

A possible reason for that finding may be that a significant amount of residents do not know what their anti- discriminary rights are when buying or renting a home.

"."there's another question in our survey about do you know your fair hosuing rights and less than half of the people responded that they knew those."

Another key issue found in the report is that some residents feel like there is not enough affordable housing in la crosse.

The report published wages necessary to own a single, double, and three room apartment and compared them to the state minimum wage.

""a person just to afford a one bedroom or a studio needs to make 11 dollars an hour well that's much higher than what minimum wage jobs pay in our area."

Even with the negative aspects reported there are some positives.

89% of residents polled were satisfied with their neighborhoods, and 70% have no plans of moving.
