The polling process for the general elections to biggest democracy in the world will begin from Thursday, April 11. In the first phase, 91 Lok Sabha constituencies from 20 states and union territories will go to polls.

The campaigning for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019 has ended as the political parties made a last-ditch effort to woo voters in 91 seats spread over 20 states and union territories. The polling process for the general elections to biggest democracy in the world will begin from Thursday, April 11. The elections to the 17th Lok Sabha are being held in seven phases. The subsequent polling dates are April 18 (97 Lok Sabha constituencies), April 23 (115), April 29 (71), May 6 (51), May 12 (59) and May 19 (59). The counting of votes will take place on May 23.

The first phase involves all the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies of Andhra Pradesh, and 17 from Telangana. The others states and union territories going to the polls in this round are: Arunachal Pradesh (2), Assam (5), Bihar (4), Chattishgarh (1), Jammu and Kashmir (2), Maharashtra (7), Manpur (1), Meghalaya (2), Mizoram (1), Nagaland (1), Odisha (4), Sikkim (1), Tripura (1), Uttar Pradesh (8), Uttarakhand (5), West Bengal (2), Andaman and Nicobar (1) and Lakshadweep (1).

Candidate profiles for Phase 1 of Lok Sabha elections 2019
A total 1279 candidates are contending in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections. According to analyses done by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), at least 17 per cent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
The organisation, which has analysed 1266 out of 1279 candidates, says that at least 146 candidates have records of serious criminal cases, out of which 10 have declared cases related to murder. At least 401 of them are crorepati candidates.

Crorepati candidates
There are 401(32%) candidates who have assets worth Rs. 1 crore and more. Among the major parties 69(83%) out of 83 candidates from INC, 65(78%) out of 83 candidates from BJP, 15(47%) out of 32 candidates from BSP, 25(100%) candidates from TDP, 22(88%) out of 25 candidates from YSRCP and 17 (100%) candidates from TRS have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.
The average asset per candidate contesting in the Lok Sabha phase I election is Rs. 6.63 crores.
Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 83 INC candidates is Rs. 21.93 crores, 83 BJP candidates is Rs 14.56 crores, 32 BSP candidates have average assets of Rs 12.63 crores, 25 YSRCP candidates have average assets worth Rs 62.94 crores, 25 TDP candidates have average assets worth Rs 57.77 crores, and 17 TRS candidates have average assets of Rs 45.87 crores
