5 Nagpur institutes in top 100 of NIRF rankings

Nagpur: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on Monday declared its ranking which saw five institutes from the region break into the top 100 slot in various categories.
Wardha’s Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (DMIMS) was the sole representative from the region in the “overall” category, ranked 92. In the “university” rankings, NU remained in the 150-200 rank band for the second year in a row, while its affiliated colleges as well as in-house institutes did much better in individual categories.

NIRF was launched by MHRD in September 2015 and the framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations and broad understanding arrived at by a committee set up by MHRD.

In the “engineering” category, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) topped the local list with a rank of 31. Pramod Padole, director of the institute, said, “The credit goes to our strong foundation of learning and research. We will aim to move higher up the rankings next year.”

The engineering category had a heavy presence from Nagpur with GH Raisoni College of Engineering (rank 111), Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management (rank 112), Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (rank 122) and Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering (rank 134).

Sagar Meghe, whose family manages both DMIMS and YCCE, said the benchmark has now been set higher. “First of all, the credit goes to our team because it has really worked hard to maintain standard of these institutes. Now, our target is to break into top 50 next year,” said Meghe.

In the “pharmacy” category, NU’s pharmacy college grabbed 29th rank followed by Smt Kishoritai Bhoyar College of Pharmacy at the 59th slot. Manoj Rai, director of NU’s Innovation and Incubation Linkages Cell, said, “We have worked hard on individual colleges and that is reflected through the rankings in engineering and pharmacy categories. Even in the university category, we have maintained our position while many others in Maharashtra have slipped.”

In the “management” category, Institute of Management (IMT) Nagpur was the sole representative from the region with a rank of 70.
