THANE: The police have slapped an FIR against three MNS workers for assaulting a BJP worker over a WhatsApp forward. The post featured a laughing cartoon face poking fun at a Raj Thackeray statement. BJP worker Pradeep Rane’s thrashing was video-recorded and even aired on a local channel, said the police complaint.
The police said that the complainant received a post on Sunday with MNS president Thackeray’s statement that he was not for sale. Thackeray’s picture was also in the post, and below it was a sketch of a man laughing and asking what was the need to buy when something was available for hire.
Thackeray is himself a serious cartoonist who often pokes fun at other politicians, at times with sharp comments accompanying his drawings.
“The complainant forwarded the post to some other people and WhatsApp groups, and it went viral in the Vrindavan locality,” an official from the Rabodi police station said. “The MNS men noticed it and felt offended.”
Around 4 pm, the MNS men went to Rane’s home and asked him about the post. The police said the MNS men abused and thrashed Rane.
“Though the complainant apologised to them and deleted the post, they were not satisfied and they videographed the thrashing and apology, and made it viral while also airing it on a local channel,” the police official said, quoting the complaint.
A case was registered against the three MNS men under Section 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), Section 504 (intentional insult with an intent to provoke breach of peace) and Section 500 (defamation) of the IPC.
Addressing a recent party conclave, Thackeray had said party workers should thrash trolls who were abusive. He had said criticism was fine but not abuse.
