Sudanese man assaults seven in housing society

PUNE: The Kondhwa police on Sunday arrested Marco Kur Deng, a 24-year-old Sudan national, for attacking the security supervisor of a housing society, two of his colleagues and four others in Yevlewadi.

The incident occurred at 8.30am, when the security personnel flagged Deng down for entering The Lake District Society at a high speed.


The supervisor and his colleagues signalled Deng to stop, following which he lost control and fell. In a fit of rage, he attacked the three men. Four residents tried to intervene. Deng attacked them too.

The supervisor, Shamrao Chavan (44), registered an FIR with the police, following which Deng was arrested.


“I, with my colleagues Vausdeo Gavai and Shrikant Poladwar, were on duty at the gate of the society,” Shamrao stated in the FIR. “We were checking visitors’ vehicles and entering their details in the register, when Deng entered the gate at a high speed,” the FIR stated.

When they saw Deng’s motorcycle did not have a security sticker, they blew a whistle and signalled him to stop.

According to the FIR, Deng applied brakes, but lost control of the bike and fell. With the help of a resident, Chavan told chastised Deng in English. “The Sudanese national started hurling abuses in English at Chavan and another person,”

“Deng suddenly kicked and punched me and also hit me with my own cane. He attacked my colleagues when they tried to pacify him. Four residents intervened, but he assaulted them as well,” Chavan told TOI.


“We suspect he was drunk. We subdued him with great difficulty and alerted the police,” Chavan said, adding that the suspect would frequently ride at a high speed in the society.


Sub inspector Vishnu Wadkar, who is investigating the case, said Deng came to India a year ago on a student visa. He is a third-year BA student. A Magisterial court released him on bail on Monday.
