MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Tuesday directed the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government to depute archaeological experts to Kannanur reserve forest in Pudukkottai to ascertain the age of the relics de-rooted from there recently by the forest department, without knowing the significance.

“The officers shall also find out whether any inscriptions are found on the stones and file a report,” a division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice S S Sundar said, in response to a petition filed by retired government school teacher Karu Rajendran.

Rajendran, who was also a member of divisional heritage committee constituted by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) department, stated that the district forest officer had deployed men and de-rooted several historic stones from the reserve forest to plant eucalyptus trees there.

A menhir (monolithic stone) and cairn circle- burial sites belonging to pre-historic era were put along the road side due to the indiscriminate ploughing, the petitioner stated citing the lack of knowledge on the part of forest officials.
