Nagpur: As sound and noise associated with public campaign for Lok Sabha elections ended on Tuesday, it seemed like BJP MP Nitin Gadkari had his nose ahead from Nagpur constituency.
A well-attended public rally addressed by BJP’s star campaigner and party president Amit Shah was the concluding event. The choice of venue was well-thought about. It was held in East Nagpur’s Kacchi Visa ground in Lakadganj area which is populated by non-Marathi residents who form sizeable voters of BJP.
Shah’s speech in Hindi was well-received by them. Though it was a working day and day temperature was recorded at 43 degrees C — the highest in the country, the crowd was good and chairs put in the shamiana were occupied.
Shah arrived at the venue after 3.30pm as the rally got delayed. But the BJP president delivered a powerful address with well-directed punches. He raised the issue of Congress candidate being ‘weak, outsider’ as no other leader from that party was ready to take on Gadkari who has made his mark as a pro-development capable leader.
As Shah had to leave early, he barely spent half-an hour at the rally but his speech did cheer up the party supporters and imbued confidence. RPI leader and Union minister of state Ramdas Athawale got the public in peels of laughter with his instant poetry and wit.
Gadkari also utilized the first half of the day by leading a scooter rally during which Union minister Piyush Goyal was also present. The rally moved through localities in west and south Nagpur assembly segments. People showered flowers on him throughout the route.
The Congress also latched on to the idea of a scooter rally perhaps to woo the first-time voters of Nagpur who like moving around in city on bikes. Nana Patole was seen riding a Bullet motorcycle with city Congress president Vikas Thakre. The bike rally starting from Sitabuldi covered a large portion of the city as it moved on main roads and concluded in Mahal.
The Congress as well as the BJP camps sounded optimistic of win. The parties would be now be closeted in strategy meetings aimed at getting out voters to reach polling stations on the voting day on Thursday.
