VARANASI: “Dadi amma, dadi amma maan jao; 19 May ko booth pe jaa kar button zaroor dabao (exhorting grandmother to vote on May 19),” a group of rural women, all clad in green, belt out the rustic parody urging people to vote on May 19 when Varanasi will go to polls.
Even as the political parties are yet to start poll rallies or public meetings, these women of Green Group have become active to motivate people for voting through folk songs and parodies.
Armed with ‘dhol’ and ‘dhafli’ (percussion instruments), they were seen moving around in Tarapur and Mudadev villages on Monday, telling people: “vote karnee jaroor jahiya (do go for voting).”
“We are trying to convince people about the importance of the voting right,” said Lilawati Devi, who along with her group members, including Shanti Devi, Jeera Devi, Mamta, Urmila and other women, moved around in the villages.
They are also getting support from local administration for this voting awareness programme.
Green Group, supported by a social organization of local youths Hope Foundation, had also conducted similar voter awareness campaign during 2017 assembly elections.
