CHANDIGARH: A day after TOI highlighted that a family has alleged their 11-month-old child died due to medical negligence at PGI, institute director Dr Jagat Ram ordered an inquiry. The family members have also written a complaint to the Union minister of health and family welfare and the PMO.
The family members had alleged their son, Rivansh Tayal, died as no one in the hospital treated the child. “We kept on waiting with some hope that the surgery will be done to remove the almond he had accidentally swallowed. But none of the doctors operated him,” said Vishal Aggarwal, a relative of the victim. He said, “We have requested the PGI director and the health minister to take strict action against the erring doctors.”
Terming the incident as ‘unfortunate’ PGI director said, “I am not certain about what exactly happened. For this, I have initiated a probe. However, this incident is unfortunate as a child died due to a problem which was preventable.” He said, “If the parents had given a written consent, no one should deny them timely treatment. The inquiry will try and find out what went wrong.”
On April 2, the baby after shuttling from a private hospital in Panchkula was rushed to the PGI soon after he had swallowed almond. The family members had alleged doctors in PGI’s Advanced Paediatric Centre did not operate their child as they had initially refused to give consent for his surgery. Thereafter, the child died. “The parents were told that the child can die on the operation table. We were so scarred that we refused. But after consultations, we went back to the doctors in PGI and requested them for the procedure,” said Vishal.
A police complaint in this regard has been forwarded and the autopsy was done on April 3 in the hospital.
