Chennai Corporation has tied up with TERI for the project

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) will join hands with the Greater Chennai Corporation to study the impact of used beverage cartons in waste management of the city.

Work on sampling of municipal solid waste in the city will start in all disposal sites of residential, commercial and institutional areas. The study will assess the quantum of used beverage cartons reaching disposal sites of the city.

“Such studies are expected to facilitate food processing and packaging solutions companies in minimising the movement of used beverage cartons to the disposal sites,” said an official.

The results will be used to increase the recycling rate of municipal solid waste and reduce the environmental burden, the official said.

A total of 5,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste is generated daily in the 15 zones of the cities. The solid waste is dumped in Perungudi and Kodungaiyur yards without proper recycling.

Initiative in 23 cities

It is part of TERI’s initiative in 23 cities across South-East Asia on the issue.

The officials in solid waste management wing in the Chennai Corporation will accompany the researchers from TERI who undertake sampling of the solid waste.
