UPSC remains one of the toughest examinations in India. Also known as "mother of all exams", every year lakhs of students apply for the examination trying to clear the 3 most difficult phases. Prelims, then Mains and the final personal interview round. This year Satender Singh aced the toughest exam with all India rank 714.

Dared to dream big

Satender Singh an assistant professor at Aurobindo College (Evening) in University of Delhi, despite being visually challenged dared to dream big. In an interview with Indiatimes Satender said, "When I was one-and-half years old, I was in the hospital due to pneumonia. I was given a wrong injection there which damaged my optic nerves because of which I lost my eyesight. My world fell apart after that incident and it was difficult for me to come to terms with that".

College life a life-changing experience

Remembering the time when he came to Delhi and got admission in the prestigious St. Stephens college, 27-year-old Satender said, "When I came here, I was from a government school. I did not know how to speak English well enough and my friends said it will be difficult for me to adjust in such an elite environment. Everything was very alien".

Owing his success to college, he said, "College embraced me with open arms and transformed me for good and I owe a great deal of gratitude to college. English, attitude, positivity, academics and understanding comes from the college. College makes you something else."

Satender prepared for the exam with the help of a screen reading software which made him able to read newspapers, books etc properly. The software allows him to navigate and read without any difficulty.

Need a change in perception

Satender stresses the need for people to change their perspective towards the ones who are visually challenged. In the interview with Indiatimes, he mentioned how he had to change people's perspective towards him.

Satender did his MA in International Relations from JNU. He also did MPhil and got enrolled in PhD. He cleared the UPSC exams in his third attempt.
