PUNE: More than 90 candidates from Maharashtra have made it to the final merit list of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams, the results of which were announced on Friday.

A majority of the candidates from the state are engineers and a few are doctors, while the rest have completed their graduation or post-graduation in arts, science or commerce.

The UPSC declared a list of 759 candidates, who had appeared for the exam conducted for administrative, foreign and police services.

According to founder of Unique Academy Tukaram Jadhav, about 70% students qualified from Maharashtra are engineering graduates. “The reason is joblessness for engineers. The students have studied engineering by choice. Once they complete the course, they are unable to find respective jobs so they look for a shift and this change is reflected in the UPSC results.”

Maharashtra has aggregated about 8-10% success rate against the total national qualifiers.

Jadhav further said that the nature of the civil services exam and the ability to deal with it matched with that of the engineering course giving the students an advantage over the rest. He explained, “The engineering students have to deal with many topics and many subjects during their four-year course period. They are used to taking that academic burden, which is similar to that of the civil services exam pattern.”

As many as five candidates from Maharashtra have made it to the top 50 list, said Jadhav. Since the past three years, women candidates from the state are bagging top positions. However, in total, fewer women than men have cleared the qualifying exams.
