Vadodara: Residents of Sanjaynagar in Warasiya have threatened to boycott the ensuing Lok Sabha elections as they are yet to get houses promised to them under the Pradhan Mantri Aavas Yojana (PMAY). The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) had razed 1,841 dwellings in Sanjaynagar in July 2017.
The land on which the dwellings stood in Sanjaynagar was vacated for slum rehabilitation, but was caught in bureaucratic wrangles with social welfare department unwilling to part with the land. While the land was subsequently handed over for the project, work is yet to begin at the site. As many as, 2,637 houses are to be constructed at the Sanjaynagar for the urban poor under a public-private partnership project under PMAY.
A major part of the land measuring over 89,000 square meter was earmarked for imparting agriculture training to inmates of a beggar’s home of the social welfare department. The land was never put to that use and slums existed at the site.
