GURUGRAM: The total number of swine flu cases recorded in the city has gone up to 61 in the past five months. This is the highest number of confirmed cases in the city since 2011. Gurugram has also reported six deaths due to H1N1 virus this winter.
Out of 90 cases confirmed in Gurugram hospitals, 61 were residents of the city. Samples of as many as 328 patients suspected to have swine flu have been sent to the health department since the onset of winter.
“As the temperature is rising, we are not expecting swine flu cases any more. However, it is true that some cases were confirmed in the past two-three weeks,” an official in the district health department said.
According to doctors, the swine flu virus strain is stronger due to a sharp drop in temperature this winter as compared to the last few years. There are three types of swine flu cases — A, B and C. While cases with minor flu-like symptoms fall into ‘Category A’ cases, ‘Category B’ cases require treatment but don’t need admission in the hospital, whereas ‘Category C’ cases require immediate admission in special wards.
“This winter, we have received severe cases (Category C) that required immediate admission in a special ward. We also reported some deaths due to swine flu, which was not witnessed in the last few years,” said a doctor from General Hospital, Civil Lines.
The district health department has instructed both private and government hospitals to send throat swab samples of patients suspected to have swine flu for testing.
After it receives samples, the department sends them to government-authorised laboratories. A case is confirmed only after it is tested positive in the authorised laboratory. It takes 24 to 48 hours to confirm a case of swine flu.
