CHENNAI: The Abhiramapuram police have arrested a 26-year-old man for running a travel agency with fake registration certificates for his fleet of vehicles. Police have seized seven vehicles, including two luxury cars.
The accused — Mohanbabu of Raja Annamalai Puram — has been running the agency in his name. A few weeks ago, one of his former employees, who was sacked, damaged a vehicle during an altercation. Mohanbabu lodged a complaint with the Abhiramapuram police station.
During inquiry, Mohanbabu was asked to submit the vehicle’s documents for a no-objection certificate to claim insurance. Police checked the documents and found out that the man had forged them.
They found that two cars and a van had similar registration numbers. Police said Mohanbabu had only three RC books with which he plied three vans and four cars. He deployed new cars without registering them and used registration certificates of the old vehicles.
The seized vehicles include three vans, two SUVs and two high-end sedans.
Mohanbabu was arrested under sections 465 (forgery) and 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) of IPC as well as Motor Vehicles Act. He was produced before a magistrate who sent him to jail.
Police said the travel agent had used documents of registered vehicles to evade taxes and road-permit related payments.
As per existing norms, every commercial vehicle (yellow board) should obtain a permit from the local RTO and renew the vehicle’s fitness certificate.
A private bus should pay ₹5,000 as tax and ₹300 to ₹500 for renewing the fitness certificate every year.
