Drunk youth hacks 4 to death, injures 3

BHAWANIPATNA: Four persons were hacked to death and three others injured by an inebriated person in Kalahandi's Palsa village. The incident took place on Saturday evening around 7.30pm under Jaipatna police station limits. Police have detained one person identified as Jatindra Naik (25) in connection with the incident.
The deceased were identified as Sundar Naik (35), Nakul Naik (35), Linga Naik (45) and Upi Sabar (55). All of them belonged to Palsa village.
Of the four deceased, three were cousins from one Harijan family and one was Adivasi.
Locally, all the four youths were engaged as daily wage labourers while the accused was jobless. Sushanta Sahoo, inspector in-charge of Jaipatna police station, said.
Primary investigation said all the victims and the accused had consumed country-made liquor on Saturday night separately. tnn
They had gone to a grocery shop in the village where an altercation broke out between them.
Police said, "According to the eyewitnesses, the victims tried to escape from Jatindra's attack but failed. Jatindra targeted one after the other on the road side. Four of them died on the spot." tnn
"After killing them, the accused ran towards the village and injured three different persons who had opened the doors of their houses. The accused chopped off one man's finger and two others suffered injuries on their hands. They were admitted to Jaipatna hospital," the witnesses added.
While the motive behind the murder is unclear, police suspect that the accused is mentally ill. The family members of the deceases had no past enmity with the accused.
The bodies have been sent for autopsy and the accused will be forwarded to the court after proper inquiry.
