Hikers missing in bushland near Bacchus Marsh

A search for two hikers will recommence on Monday after they went missing in treacherous terrain near Bacchus Marsh.

The two hikers became lost in Lerderderg State Forest, north-west of Melbourne, on Sunday about 6.40pm.

Emergency services were alerted when they failed to return home after a planned hike.

A police spokeswoman said they were forced to call off the search about 2.30am on Sunday due to the treacherous terrain, however they have made contact with the pair on the phone who are aware of the rescue plan.

The operation will resume on Monday morning.

In 2014, three young bushwalkers got lost in Lerderberg State Forest, spending a freezing night lost in a state park north of Melbourne with only a child's hoodie and makeshift structure to shield them from the cold.

Kirrilee Ord, 21, her brother Mitchell, 12, and boyfriend Ben Warlond, 24, from Werribee were hiking in Lerderderg State Park when they became lost.

Police search and rescue Leading Senior Constable Matt Roberts said the trio had done the right thing by staying in the one place once they became lost.
