Teens accused of setting fire to Sunshine Coast home, killing family pets
Two teenage girls have been accused of lighting a house fire on the Sunshine Coast that sent two people to hospital and killed the family pets on Monday morning.
Police allege the girls, aged 14 and 13, lit the fire in a the downstairs bedroom of a Nambour home before it spread through the house, causing significant damage and killing some of the family pets.
A woman in her 40s was taken to Nambour Hospital along with her son, aged in his 20s, suffering smoke inhalation and burns to fingers.
A firefighter told reporters at the scene that the girls lived at the house and they had fled from the fire to the Nambour railway station.
Police would not say if the girls lived at the house, but did say they knew the home owner.
Both teens were charged with arson, assault and serious animal cruelty and were set to appear at the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
