PUNE: A 22-year-old software engineer with a multinational bank in the city succumbed to head and spine injuries on Sunday, nearly 10 days after he dived headfirst into a shallow swimming pool.
The accident had occurred in the swimming pool of a housing society in Vadgaonsheri, in which the deceased, Shyam Niteshkumar Kalariya, had rented a flat.
According to police, Kalariya had suffered severe head and spinal injuries in the fatal dive into the 3.5-foot-deep swimming pool. His head immediately hit the floor of the pool. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries.
Late on Sunday night, the Yerawada police registered a case of accidental death in this connection.
Police said Kalariya moved to Pune nine months ago after securing a job with the bank’s Pune office. “Kalariya was a native of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. He was living in a housing society at Kharadkarnagar in Vadgaonsheri,” assistant police inspector Balbhim Nanaware of Yerawada police told TOI.
Nanaware said the accident had occurred late on the night of March 29. He said the society had a small swimming pool on its premises. Tragically enough, the society maintains the level of water in the pool at 3.5ft to avert any untoward incidents.
“It has yet to be ascertained why Kalariya dived headfirst into a pool that had little water. His head smashed into the pool’s floor as soon as he dived. He lost consciousness,” the police officer said.
One of Kalariya’s friends had accompanied him to the pool. “The victim’s friend immediately raised an alarm and also rushed him to a private hospital on Ahmednagar Road,” said Nanaware. “The friend saw that Kalariya had sustained head injuries. Later, the hospital authorities said that Kalariya had suffered spinal injuries (as well),” said Nanaware.
The private hospital’s administration contacted the police immediately after Kalariya was admitted there. Police rushed to the site and called Kalariya’s parents, who arrived in Pune and were in the hospital for the past week. Police said Kalariya’s body was handed over to his parents late on Sunday night.
