2 get 10 years in jail for robbing man of Rs 500 in 2017
Gurgaon: More than a year after allegedly attacking a factory worker in Manesar and robbing him of Rs 500, the accused — Anoop Sharma (28) and Kuldeep (22) — received 10-year jail terms, along with a fine of Rs 25,000 each from a district and sessions court.
The quantum of punishment was announced by district and sessions judge R K Sondhi on Saturday.

According to police, the incident took place around 1.15am on July 23, 2017, when Rajesh Singh, a resident of Bas Kushla Colony, was returning home after work from his factory in Manesar. Anoop and Kuldeep intercepted him near Bas Gaon Chowk and forcefully snatched Rs 500 in cash and his voter ID card. Rajesh had told police that the duo had also thrashed him with sticks in order to snatch the money.

As Rajesh shouted for help, a PCR van stationed nearby rushed to his rescue. “Though the duo tried to flee, they were chased, tracked down and arrested by the police,” an officer said. An FIR was registered against the duo under sections 379B (snatching) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC at Manesar police station.

During the hearing on Saturday, public prosecutor Anurag Hooda said, “Anoop Sharma, at the time of arrest, told ASI Devender Kumar that his name was Ramphal. But police managed to establish his real identity and later added Section 205 (false personation) of IPC to the FIR.”

Haryana was the first state to introduce strict laws against snatchers in 2015. The state added two new clauses — 379A and 379B — to the existing Section 379 (theft) of IPC and defined snatching as a non-bailable crime. Earlier, Section 379 of IPC carried a maximum punishment of three years, or a fine, or both. According to the new clauses, under Section 379A (snatching), the convict faces rigorous imprisonment for a term not less than five years and shall also be liable to a fine of Rs 25,000. Under Section 379B (snatching & use of force), the offender will face imprisonment not less than 10 years, but may extend to 14 years and also be liable to Rs 25,000 fine.
