Connecting arms delayed due to hitch in land acquisition

About 50% of the work on two ramps connecting the Chennai Outer Ring Road (CORR) at Vandalur with GST Road has been completed.

Even though the first phase from Vandalur to Nemilichery was thrown open to traffic in 2014, the connecting arms could not be constructed due to problems in land acquisition and vehicles were getting onto the six-lane road after driving in the service lane for a short distance.

The ramps from Tiruchi to the CORR and from CORR to Chennai are under construction. Already the ramp from CORR to the Tiruchi side is functional, said officials of the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC), the managing associate for the project.

This work is expected to be completed in a few months time. “We have set a deadline and have directed the contractor to finish it within the stipulated time,” he said.

Motorists take detour

The 62-km-long road connecting Vandalur and Minjur also faced land acquisition problems and due to one last stretch of 210 m forcing motorists to take a detour of 3.5 km at Red Hills.

Motorists have to take the service road, enter Red Hills and exit at Padianallur RTO office and get onto CORR to reach Minjur.

“There were a few other stretches where also land was an issue. But those points, including one near Poonamallee High Road, have been cleared and construction work is on,” the official explained. The road has become quite popular with motorists and on an average 30,000 vehicles are using it of which trucks alone constitute around 7,000. The road is also set to become a tolled facility soon.
