PUNE: A rashly driven truck ran over a nine-year-old cyclist while attempting to overtake another vehicle at Lohegaon on Saturday morning.

An officer from the Airport police told TOI that the accident happened near a water tank at Lohegaon around 9am.

“The truck which came from the opposite side attempted to overtake a vehicle,” the officer said.

“The truck landed on the other side of the road, hit the cyclist and ran over him,” the officer added.

Angry local residents blamed the digging work for installation of high tension wires in Lohegaon and haphazardly placed rubble alongside the road which has reduced the carriage way for vehicle users for the accident that claimed a young life.

The Airport police have registered a case against the truck driver for causing death due to negligence of the nine-year-old boy Vishwas Kattamani of Lohegaon.

The boy died on the spot. “The driver did not stop after the accident,” the police officer said.

The local people took the boy to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.

“We have the registration number of the truck. We will arrest the driver,” the office said.

A resident of Lohegaon, who did not wish to be named, alleged that the accident happened due to the rubble that was placed haphazardly along the road.

“The road was dug up for laying cables and covered haphazardly. The rubble is still on the road and driving has become risky here,” he said.

He said the authorities should complete the repairs immediately.

Motorcyclist dies

Shahanabaz Bashir Khan (42) of Wadgaonsheri was killed after the motorcycle he was riding on the wrong side of Khand Road in Bund Garden area skidded.

“He died of head injuries as he was not wearing a helmet,” an officer from the Bund Garden police station said.

The accident happened on March 23 around 11.30pm.

The police had registered a case of accidental death.

However, a probe revealed that Khan was on the wrong side of the road at high speed. He lost his balance and fell after his motorcycle skid on the road.

“An offence has been registered against Khan on Saturday,” the officer said.
